Mr. Harmer points out, “Avoidance of pornography in our culture for a teenager is no longer possible.  It aggressively seeks them out and it deceptively persuades them that they can be involved with pornography and that no harm will come from it.  People everywhere need to be conscious of the fact that its prevalence in our society represents an enormous danger to our future, social and political stability.  And I mean that in exactly those words.”

 

John Harmer received so many requests from people to help them fight the intrusion of pornography that he decided he would have to institutionalize.  Thus, the Lighted Candle Society was born in 1999.  It is a nonprofit, charitable, educational organization incorporated in Washington, D.C.  Mr. Harmer was aware of a number of good organizations fighting pornography.   However, he desired the Lighted Candle Society to do three things that the other organizations were not doing.

 

(1)  Litigation – The Lighted Candle Society will bring civil suits against pornography producers based on the injury pornographers were doing to people.   This is similar to what was done to the cigarette companies.  They currently have filed some civil suits in California and are preparing to file two major law suits in other states outside of Utah.

 

(2) Research – Over the past thirty years the decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court regarding pornography have stated, in essence, that Biblical morality may not be used as an argument against pornographer producers.  Only scientific proof that the product of pornography is causing injury.  Thus, scientific research is absolutely necessary.

 

This society started research three years ago to show how pornography harms the human brain.  They have spent tens of thousands of dollars on this research.  Although there have been hundreds of fMRI studies on the brain, none of them have been exclusively on the harm of pornography.  Their research has discovered that in less than 2/100ths of a second a person sees an image and it is implanted in the brain.  That means that before a person can even determine that the image is harmful and get rid of it, the image has already been recorded in the brain.

 

They have also learned that the brain as a human organ does not reach its full maturity until sometime between 22 and 25 years of age.  Younger than that age, the brain is still a work in progress.   It is easier to rehabilitate someone who is addicted to cocaine or heroin than to rehabilitate someone addicted to pornography.  This is because you can finally get the drugs out of the body, but you cannot rid the images from the brain.

 

Neuroscientists have discovered that pornography sets up pathways in the brain that override cognition and inhibition.  The pornography addict loses all agency.  Often people wonder how anyone could torture, rape, and kill an innocent child.   This is explained by the fact that the addict’s brain has lost its cognition (ability to think) and the inhibitory function.  Their brain cannot tell them to stop; they have lost all control.

 

(3)Publishing Research – Research is included in John Harmer’s new book and the newsletters of the Lighted Candle Society sends out.
